Shohin Collected Redwood

Postby Brian Underwood » Mon Jan 11, 2010 3:44 pm

Here is a redwood I bought about 9 months ago, and have been developing it since. I have worked on it in class, and on my own, but it just doesn't remind me of the redwoods here in my home, California. I'm not convinced that such a feat can be achieved with shohin material. But hey, maybe I just haven't found the right tree yet. So, instead of styling any further, and giving it a chance, I abandoned it on eBay! So anyone else that happens to see the tree's super potential can buy it. I just wanted to know everyone's thoughts about shohin redwood material...

No thoughts on Shohin sized redwoods? Well, I have a larger one that will have it's picture taken tomorrow, and it's own post on the forum. I still believe Chuhin (12-18 inches) is roughly the minimum size a redwood should be in order to be convincing.
I guess everyone is busy re-potting their trees... You all better be taking pictures soon! -=Brian=-

If winter ended then I could begin repotting! Only two of my trees have been repotted yet (larch and cotoneaster)... any time now though. :gr8:

Think the Shohin redwood is a bit of a tall order... getting the foliage compact enough would be difficult but I haven't worked with this species, does it behave like Taxus (clearly it buds from old wood in the same manner as those branches do not look grafted)?

Oh yeah, I forget most of Europe isn't quite done with winter yet....
This species is VERY fast growing, and will bud from everywhere! Trunk, branches, new growth, and even from the roots. The branches thicken and have secondary growth within about a year, during which time you can start reducing needle size, but not by much. You should give the species a try, its very fun. I actually don't have any experience with Taxus, it is not very common material where I live and pretty hard to come by. We should trade someday ;)

I've been blessed to see lots of big, old-growth redwoods, and "shohin" is not a word or concept that comes to mind when beholding those long, tall giants. If you want to make an English Yew image with your squatty redwood, that would probably work. Otherwise, let a leader grow free and let the darned thing be a redwood! I have a couple of the Shimon Bros. collected redwoods (one I got at an estate sale for $35!) and I intend to have them be as redwoody as possible. One will be a formal upright, the other a hollow-stump/new leader type of tree I think.

I have been using collected Redwoods as Bonsai material with great success since 1985. At shows people show a lot of interest in the trees and ask if I had material for sale. Until 1996, I had an extra tree now and again that I would sell.

I have heard that Redwoods store thousands of gallons of water , So that It will have been never run out in the dry summer months. Redwoods is known as one of the tallest tree in the world. I wish that I will also get it as small plant as far.

I have to say I very much like your redwood.it may not remind you of a redwood in nature but it sure has alot of character, well I wouldn't be wanting to get rid of it anyway. If I lived over in California, USA I would buy it eagerly.
Thanks,
Hugh
